In the Lockheed Martin MATHCOUNTS® National Competition, Texas team captured the title of National Team Champions in Denver at the Denver Marriott Tech Center. Team members include Bobby Shen of Sugar Land, Kevin Tian of Austin, Ding Zhou of Houston, Kevin Li of College Station and coach Jeff Boyd of Sugar Land.

The Washington team took second place, and the Maryland team placed third.

Darryl Wu of Bellevue, Washington won the individual title. Bobby Shen of Sugar Land, Texas, was awarded the second-place individual title with Anderson Wang of Ambler, Pennsylvania, and Evan Miller of Owensboro, Kentucky, advancing to the Semi-finals.

In addition to winning team national championship, Bobby Shen of Sugar Land won national individual 2nd place at the final countdown. He is also the individual national champion at the written round and Masters round of the competition.

In three of the last four years, Texas has won MATHCOUNTS Team National Championship (2005, 2007, 2008). All of them were led by Coach Jeff Boyd from First Colony Middle School at Sugar Land. This year, in addition to winning team national championship, Bobby Shen of First Colony middle school, Sugar Land won national individual 2nd place at the final countdown. He also won the individual national champion at the written round and Masters round. Bobby Shen, Kevin Li, and their coach Jeff Boyd were in last year's national championship team. They were awarded a trip to the White House in June of 2007. This year, they will be going to the White House again to meet the President of United States.
